Silchester - Saturday 9th August

A short walk around the Roman town of Silchester and a visit to the excavations Open Day.  Silchester is the meeting point for five Roman roads, including the 'Devil's Highway' which runs through Berkshire from London and Staines, and roads from Alchester, Cirencester, Salisbury and Winchester.

Meet at 11.00am in the Silchester Car Park, Grid Ref  SU636629.  Approaching Mortimer from the east, fork left opposite the recreation ground.  After approx one mile turn left, signed Silchester with a brown sign.  At a T junction turn left and the car park is shortly on the right.  Bring drinks and a packed lunch.  The path is not particularly muddy but walking shoes are recommended, and suitable clothing as there is very little shelter.  Toilets are to be found at the car park and in the church.  Please note that Silchester village is some distance from the Roman Town.

The walk will circumnavigate the town and visit the 12th century church of St Mary the Virgin.  Weather permitting, lunch will be taken in the Amphitheatre before completing the walk round the walls.  As an optional extra for those who wish to learn more, the Reading University excavations will be open to visitors, and tours of the site, displays, and demonstrations of archaeological techniques will be available.  This is the last year of the excavations in Insula IX.
